About Us
The story, there's always a story
I think my Mom had an epitome when she told me I needed to learn to cook at 12 years old because I would probably marry someone that couldn't. She didn't know it then, but everything she taught me early would open the door and set in motion a passion for cooking. A passion that would take me to places and introduce me to some of the greatest Cooks and Chefs from around the world.
My first restaurant job landed me at an establishment named JB's Big Boy. You know the checkered overall-wearing boy with the hamburger in his hand, yes that place. I followed my manager to another restaurant that involved catering for a local business, making soups for our location and the other sister locations, and cooking in our own restaurant. I went on to other things working for Hardware stores, hospital supply warehouses, and running my own Mobile DJ Service
In 2012, I became a Certified KCBS BBQ Judge and landed on the Board of Directors for the Greater Omaha BBQ Society. Would eventually start a competition BBQ team called Spice Your Life Rub Your Meats involving my daughter and son. As a team, we won several BBQ awards and accolades. We started doing other competitions. We won the Omaha Beer and Bacon Festival twice, Culinary Fight Club Tasters Choice twice, the Septemberfest Ribeye Challenge in 2019, and 3rd Place Ribs twice at Omaha's own Ribstock.
In 2019, I was granted a Treager Influencership that I proudly worked for 2 1/2 years. I have made 7 appearances at the World Food Championships with some great Sous Chefs behind me. In 2022, we finished 6th in the World for Bacon and 2023, we finished 4th in the World in the Bacon Category
I taught cooking classes at Omaha's Fireplace Stone and Patio for several years. In 2022 I started a food business under the BBQ name Spice Your Life Rub Your Meat that included Catering, Dinner Parties, Group and Private Cooking Classes, and Special Events. This year we changed the name from Spice Your Life Rub Your Meats to Chef Michael Hogan. While Spice Your Life Rub Meats brought lots of recognition, it was time to upgrade to the future since there are so many more options to offer. New this year Team Building Cooking Exercises and Corporate Cooking demos.
